Reyna Uvaldo

I am Reyna Uvaldo, a Graphic Design student at the University of Central Arkansas. I work in the realm of memory and how it is better to love and lose than to not love at all. I hit on topics of my own experiences with childhood and even those that affect others.  My works are mostly digital with analog elements such as drawing, photography, and collage.  I also tend to incorporate many bright and vivid colors to create light and dimension within my works.  On the contrary, for the darker pieces that I compose, there are dark and black elements to set the mood.  I wish for my viewers to be able to feel these memories as their own and experience my world through their own eyes, inserting their scenarios to be aligned with mine.  I do this by incorporating facts and research into my works alongside visuals that may seem familiar to most and fit into shared experiences among humans such as feelings of emotion, different sources of traumas, and the troubles that come with just simply living.  Additionally, I create many different poster designs and digital media to get my artwork across to mass amounts of people by using social media, usage of various digital sources and screens. With that, some techniques such as grain and blur are prevalent in my works which enhance my ideas of memory and how they can become hazy and fade away and or may seem bright and vivid. My inspirations come from not only my own life experiences but also the films Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Butterfly Effect, both sci-fi films that hit on the importance of your memory.

My training in Graphic Design began when I was a sophomore at Little Elm High School and has carried on through my college years.  I have worked with visiting artists such as Fabiola Jean-Louis in her Waters of the Abyss exhibition hosted here on the UCA campus in 2023.  I have had tremendous support for my career through my University especially when I was honored with the Yvonne Disterheft scholarship which will be funding a part of my education for this next year.  As my works continue to be produced and I advance my education I hope to explore more of the correlation of memory to the present and build off of life experiences and lessons that are learned along the way.
